Parenting….. Oh boy! Rather girl!

I am a new mom at 41… and yes it was a 2011 new year resolution and here I am in 2012 attempting to demonstrate the gall of writing a regular column on parenting !!! Well the good thing is that, it is NOT an advice column.

When Life Teaches

Yesterday was Teacher’s Day back in India. I recall that day very well from my childhood, when no matter what grade you were in, you would make a card for your favorite teacher, bring him or her flowers, or have a craft project dedicated to one’s teacher etc. There was an essay or a talk we would do about the first Vice President of independant India – Dr. S. Radhakrishnan as he was a great teacher and his birthday was September 5th.

How Indian Am I

Posted in

A few days ago, a very interesting conversation was generated on my page on Facebook. Putting the “I wrote- she wrote – he wrote” part aside, coz the reactions could have come from anyone on my friends’ list, the incident did spark a bit of introspection on my part. How Indian am I? What defines my “Indian”ness or sense of nationalistic pride? Or have I lost in the last decade or so, as I have been so comfortable and at home in this country.

This is what the web says in the most succinct matter about the Lion King –

“Based on the 1994 Disney animated film, THE LION KING continues to reign as one of the most popular shows on Broadway and around the world. The global phenomenon is the winner of more than 70 major awards worldwide, including the Tony Award® for Best Musical, and the Grammy® for Best Musical Show Album.”

When You Come this Close to losing Someone...

The room was pitch dark, except for the dim light that poured in from the blinds. The fresh snow on the ground outside reflected the street lights and caused an incandescent glow to stream in. I knew it was not yet time to get up, but something stirred deep within me and I knew I had to turn to my prized possession by my pillow. The love of my life needs no introduction to those who know me well, to those who don't, the suspense will probably help put things into perspective.

And I Didn't Even Know His Name...

For the last year that I have worked in my new job ( well not so new any more I guess), I usually have gone to the cafeteria first thing in the morning to fill up my water bottle, get a cuppa green tea and a bagel or a donut and I wonder why the scales ain't tipping left !!, aah.. the ironies in my life.. but that is not what this post is about. This is about a person I met there often but never got to know his name.

Alaska - more than a dream.. so close to reality.. yet so different

The first thing I will always remember about Alaska.. will be the pearl grey waters of the Knik Arm reflecting the light of the sun.. and the view from the plane window .. it was breathtaking.. it was the 10 PM August sun that shone over the Anchorage coastline. The way it cast its mystical spell over the still ocean waters, I knew this was going to be different from any other place I had been to. And it truly was.. As soon as the plane touched down, there was a light drizzle and when then I saw it.. a lovely arch just outside the plane window.. yes, the rainbow said it all.. this would be a lovely trip.. Alaska made me feel at home that day with that rainbow and I know I will always want to go back.

2 backpacks, a good shampoo and London and then some... all in 5 days

The hubby and I took off for the UK early April of 2007 and it was one of those impromptu trips that happen because often times Airlines offer really good rates.. not the most romantic motivator but nonetheless, this turned out to be one of our best impulsive trips yet...
