The Ashimas of Today....

The Ashimas of Today......
Yes, you got it right- I am referring to Jhumpa Lahiri’s “Ashima”, that Ashima who left her parents, her familiar surroundings and her “muri-chanachur” to settle in a country the terrain, people, ways, and food of which were indeed “foreign”! When I read the book ( "The Namesake")  for the first time, I was in India. I lived 10 minutes away from my parents. The book was awesome, but I began to relate to it only after I landed in Toronto five years ago. Unknowingly Ashima entered my senses and has continued to nestle somewhere in my heart 24/7.....

TGI Friday....:)

Posted in

It's almost 11 o'clock at night in this part of the world. A day of running errands around the house and after an about-to-be toddler can become real deal sometimes...I'm sure many of us here will agree. So this is the time I get to read, write and feed my mind, when the 'keeping busy' characters are done for the day...off to sleep..!!

I am quite enjoying this me time on a Friday night, when there's no real tug at the mind to be in bed by now...when the warning of a next busy day is spared (oh how I love weekends...). So here I am.. reading, blogging...surfing the web world.

The murder of the Feminine

These are female chromosomes, their genius lies in the fact that their entire life they will spend explaining that their sexuality is incidental and yet they will be borne on the cross and be judged in and every step in life.

The Pain of Being a Pretty Face

Posted in

A friend on my Face Book friend list had written this caption on a picture, “Just because it looks pretty does not make it any less correct!” – Ruma Chakravarti
My mind wandered, taking me back to many years ago, a day back in college. It was my final year of University and we were having a debate on a passage from Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ in the canteen over umpteen cups of tea.

Starting afresh this New Year! Time to let go the past!

Hi Friends! Happy New Year!

I hope that the year started great for all of you. For me, yes it did! I had a great time in India with my family and friends and now I am back in Hong Kong, just in time to celebrate the Chinese New Year!

The Tyranny Of Beauty

Watching the Nigella Lawson cooking show on TV is an act of sheer decadence for me.   A strikingly beautiful woman, spilling out of her dress, she makes gluttony look like a form of art.  I sigh as I watch her pour cartons of double cream, slabs of dark chocolate and a generous dash of rum – forbidden pleasures for most of us.  And as she gleefully adds a slab of butter, your eyes pop out in horror.

Do You Think You Are Free?

This weekend was a blast. On Saturday most sisters went rushing to their brothers to renew the lifetime protection warranty. Independence Day on a Monday was an added bonanza. It seems all these years of singing Just another manic Monday Wish it were Sunday did not fall on deaf ears.
Many of my friends zoomed off for a weekend getaway to nearby hill stations, while the rest of us had to contend ourselves with retail therapy and hogathons. An extended weekend is like a windfall so why not make the most of it.
