Having a baby changes people; it changes a marriage. At one point, the most important person on the face of the earth was the spouse. Once the baby arrives, however, that “most important person” category goes plural, incorporating the child.
As responsible parents, it is important to ensure the overall security and safety of that child no matter what. Sure, beefing up home security with an advanced home alarm system is a great way to ward off potential threats, but many objects that can threaten an infant’s life already exist within the home. That is why childproofing is the most important home security measure around.
Although there are specific lists for childproofing based on age and mobility of the baby, parents should start incorporating the majority of these protective tactics before the toddler is even born. There are many things that a parent should consider, which is why a checklist is the best way to make sure that all aspects of a home are covered.
Electrical outlets – Many people know not to stick wet fingers or metal near an electrical source, but infants are none the wiser. Cheap plastic covers are readily available at any hardware store and should be used for any outlet that does not have anything plugged into it. Once the baby starts crawling, there is no telling where he or she will go or what he or she will do. So preventing a possible electrical outlet incident is at the top of the list.
Safety gates – A staircase can easily turn into a rough or dangerous fall for an avid crawler. In the same way that owners of puppies utilize gates to prevent puppies from going outside or upstairs, a new parent should use the similar gates to reduce the amount of movement for a baby. The tops and bottoms of stairs should be blocked as well as areas leading to outside, like screen doors.
Sharp corners – Investing in edge bumpers is a great childproofing measure, since mobile infants can easily poke an eye or cut themselves on the corners of coffee tables and other types of furniture. Even tennis balls can be utilized to prevent an infant from hurting their hands or faces. At the same time, phones with cords should be replaced by cordless phones in order to avoid possible strangulation or other incidents that could occur if a baby gets tangled up.
Anti-scald devices – These devices are readily available at any hardware store, but it is recommended to have a plumber properly install them. If there is one thing that kids love playing with, it is the water faucets. With an anti-scalding apparatus, parents will never have to worry about their kids severely burning themselves.
Other home alarm systems – Besides the home alarm for the front door and windows, new parents should look into investing in additional fire detectors as well as carbon monoxide monitors to ensure the safety of both the family and the infant. If a pool is in the backyard, a good idea is to purchase a pool alarm, which will sound if someone actually falls in. Until the child can swim, possible drowning is a big risk. With a pool alarm, a parent will immediately know if their son or daughter has accidentally fallen in.
These days, home alarm systems are essential for ensuring the overall security of your family. You protect your child from the inside and adt security will guard your family from the outside.
